William King Construction measures success not just in projects delivered, but in careers started, communities supported, and the lasting impact we leave across Cumbria and beyond.
We have always believed that a construction business rooted in a community has a responsibility to that community. Not just to build well, but to employ locally, to develop talent, to support suppliers on our doorstep and to operate in a way that leaves the area better than we found it.
West Cumbria is our home. The people who work for us live here, their families live here and the buildings we construct stand here for generations. That connection is not incidental to how we work. It is fundamental to it.
As we have grown, so has our ability to make a meaningful impact. Every apprentice we take on, every local supplier we commission and every community project we deliver is a direct investment in the place we call home.
As an approved Programme and Project Partner to Sellafield Ltd, William King Construction operates at the highest level of regulated, safety-critical contracting in the UK nuclear sector.

Aspire Academy Training Facility · Cumbria
Beyond the Aspire Academy, we run a structured active programmes designed to develop the skills and lay the groundwork for the next generation of construction professionals.
Our investment in people is not limited to those already on our team. We actively engage with schools, colleges and training providers across the region to create pathways into the industry for young people who might not otherwise consider construction as a career.
We are actively working with UTC to identify T-Level candidates who join us on structured two-year placements beginning in September 2024. These are not work experience placements. They are genuine, paid industry positions designed to build real competency.
Two-year placement. Industry-standard training. September 2024 cohort. Covering construction, civils and project support disciplines.
Apprenticeships are central to how we build the team. We place a significant focus on bringing people into the business through structured learning, combining on-site experience with formal qualification. For us, an apprentice is not cheap labour. They are the future of the business.
Formal accreditation pathways. Mentored on-site experience. Progression into permanent roles. Available across construction, commercial and operations disciplines.
We actively prioritise local suppliers and subcontractors where quality and programme allow. The economic benefit of the projects we work on should flow into the communities around them. That is both a commercial principle and a moral one.
Preference for Cumbrian and North West businesses. Keeping revenue local. Supporting the regional supply chain across nuclear, construction and civil engineering.
Succession planning is not something most construction businesses talk about openly. We think it should be. We are building a business with the depth and structure to continue growing, creating jobs and delivering quality long beyond any founding generation.
Internal development pathways. Leadership training. Structure built to scale. A business designed to outlast any individual and to keep creating opportunity.
At William King Construction, our values are not a list on a wall. They are the standard we hold ourselves to every day, on every project, with every client, colleague and community we interact with. They were shaped by the way this business was built and they guide every decision we make.
01.
Our clients are at the heart of everything we do. We listen, we respect their vision, and we work collaboratively to deliver it. Not just the structure. The outcome they actually wanted.
02.
Excellence in every aspect of the work. Industry-standard materials, the latest techniques, and a team that takes pride in the finish — not just the completion.
03.
We say what we mean and we do what we say. From the first conversation to final handover, our clients, partners and people can trust that we will always be honest, transparent and straightforward to work with.
04.
We keep evolving. New ideas, new thinking, new approaches to making the business better. And a genuine commitment to reducing our ecological footprint alongside that growth.
05.
Success is built on teamwork. Mutual respect between employees, clients and partners. Every project benefits from a collective effort — not individual effort in parallel.
06.
The safety of our team, our clients and the communities we work in is non-negotiable. Stringent protocols, continuous investment in training, and a culture where safety is never a compromise.
07.
We give back to the communities we serve. Local initiatives, community projects, social and economic investment in the areas where we operate. This is built into the business model, not bolted on.
08.
Feedback welcomed. Change embraced. Investment in professional development as a permanent fixture, not a response to problems. We stay at the front because we never assume we have arrived.
We are building a business designed to last. That means creating internal pathways that allow the right people to grow into leadership, developing the next generation of construction professionals, and ensuring the business has the depth to sustain and grow its community impact over time.

Internal pathways for those already in the business to grow into senior roles. We build the team we want by developing the people we have.
We take our environmental responsibilities seriously and work continuously to reduce the impact of our operations across all of our sites. Our approach is practical, measurable and built into how we plan and deliver every project we take on.
Material procurement planned to minimise waste at source. Surplus materials are returned, reused or responsibly disposed of in line with our Environmental Policy.
Where possible, materials and labour are sourced locally. Shorter supply chains mean lower emissions, less transport impact and stronger regional economic benefit.
Site assessments include consideration of ecological impact. We operate with awareness of the landscapes we work within, particularly across the Cumbrian countryside and protected areas near the Lake District.
Our Environmental Policy is reviewed regularly and updated to reflect current best practice. It is available in full on request and published on our website.
