The former Whitehaven News building is one of those properties that means something to a town. People walked past it for decades. It was part of the fabric of the place. When Whitehaven Town Council appointed William King Construction to deliver its full renovation, we understood from the start that this was about more than construction. It was about giving a building that mattered to people a future it deserved.
Our brief was to transform the former newspaper offices into a modern, accessible community and civic space, fit for purpose for generations to come. Working alongside PHP Architects (North East), the project required a careful and knowledgeable balance between heritage preservation and modern functionality, ensuring the building held onto its historic character while meeting today’s standards for accessibility, safety and usability.
Working closely with the design team throughout, our team delivered the full scope. Full internal strip-out and reconfiguration, structural alterations to accommodate new layouts, installation of a new lift and accessibility upgrades, fire safety and M&E upgrades, modern building services and the careful restoration of retained architectural features. Local specialist subcontractors were brought in where their particular skills added value, reinforcing the community focus of the project and making sure the right heritage knowledge was applied at every stage.
The building that stands today is a revitalised hub for community life and local governance in Whitehaven. Its historic character is intact. Its future is secure. And the town has a space it can be genuinely proud of.

Renovation of an historic building invariably presents structural and sequencing challenges that are not always visible until work begins. The Whitehaven News building was no different. Challenges were identified at every stage through very close investigative works, coupled with close coordination with the design team and building control, and adaptive problem-solving was built into the renovation as an ongoing process from the outset.
At William King Construction, we were appointed as Principal Contractor for this project to bring a considered balance of modern construction knowledge and heritage sensitivity to the Whitehaven News Building renovation.
Every older building like this one holds surprises. The key is being prepared for them. Our team carried out thorough early investigative works, building a detailed picture of what we were working with before the main programme began. That preparation allowed us to sequence the works intelligently, adapt confidently when challenges arose on site, and keep the project moving without compromising quality or the integrity of the building.
Throughout the project we kept communication open and consistent with PHP Architects, Whitehaven Town Council and building control. Bringing in local specialist subcontractors where their knowledge added the most value meant the heritage elements of the project were handled by people who genuinely understood them. That is an approach we take on every project of this kind, and it made a real difference here.
The finished building is a testament to what can be achieved when the right team works with purpose, care and a real connection to what the project means to the community it serves.
A thorough investigative survey was carried out before works began, giving us a clear understanding of the building's structural condition, constraints and opportunities. Detailed planning and close coordination with PHP Architects set the programme up for confident delivery.
Structural alterations were carried out to accommodate new internal layouts, including the careful removal and adaptation of existing elements. All works were sequenced to protect the retained architectural features and minimise risk to the surrounding fabric of the building.
Full fit-out installation including the new lift, accessibility upgrades, fire safety and M&E systems, and modern building services throughout. Careful restoration of retained architectural features was carried out alongside new finishes and bathroom installation and final finishes.
Engaging the UC building giving a stage of well-considered fit-out handover to client, on programme and within agreed budget, with the building ready for its new life as a community and civic space for Whitehaven.
